NSW: Road safety Easter campaign begins today

Motorists in New South Wales will be targeted by an Easter road safety campaign that
hits television screens tonight.

The Roads and Traffic Authority campaign highlights the dangers of speeding and failing
to wear seatbelts.

It follows Premier BOB CARR'S embarassing fine last week for failing to buckle up just
24 hours after announcing tough new rules to curb the road toll.

RTA communications director PAUL WILLOUGHBY says the Easter campaign focuses on the
key lessons from the unacceptably high Christmas/New Year toll, where a record 40 people
died.

Two 15-second television commercials, print and radio advertisements and billboards
will drive the message home.

For the first time, double demerit points will be issued to motorists not wearing a
seatbelt as well as speeding during the Easter break.

The penalties will apply from midnight on Wednesday (11/04) to midnight on Easter Monday (16/04).
