Authorities on Thursday banned three Hindu nationalist groups and jailed top Hindu leaders accused of inciting Hindu-Muslim riots that have killed at least 950 people.
Fighting between Hindus and Muslims raged on in Calcutta and other cities Thursday, and the semiofficial Press Trust of India news agency said 170 people were killed.
The violence, among the worst since India's independence in 1947, began Monday, a day after Hindu zealots razed a 400-year-old mosque in Ayodhya so they could build a Hindu temple on the spot. The Hindus claim the mosque was built on the birthplace of the Hindu god Ram.
